An Island in Maine where age doesn't matter

The Warehouse- where family traditions continue to be passed along and learned and reflected on...

Cushing's  Island tradition- reading stories! Oh the memories this invokes- what a joy this was and still is! Gammie(mom), Emmett, Meegs and Tucker

Walking the paths- the same paths we took and still take to get to the corners of the island for  shared adventures between young and old. Fiona and Molly heading to meet Gammie and dogs at the point.

Heading out to the island from Portland- oh what feeling - first trip the island all year! We couldn't wait!

Grandaddy and Tucker on his 1st birthday!
Rosemary-in training to be a guide dog and Sonnet who is 13 and retired after 10 years of service as a guide dog. What a cyclical relationship back and forth, give and take!
Curt with Tucker

Jack, Me, Molly and Fiona and Sonnet- swimming at Big Beach which still has Table Rock and still is best at high tide and still can lead you to The Point via the rocks. Oh the things that go unchanged on Cushings island from one generation to the next!

Mom and Dad who started the traditions in 1970!  Now to be able to look at their life, ask of them what it was like and now what it is like and have them share their experiences- how lucky we all are to keep learning from all the generations that surround us!

The dress up performances- yup generation-less and still happening- here is Gammie and Fiona for some pre-dessert entertainment

John taking Molly Jack and I across Casco Bay for dinner

Post dinner laughs- Sally, Dad, Me and Mom

Skip, Joan and Phil (his folks)
Another wonderful part of this trip was Skip's and my parents spending time together. We appreciated the conversations shared, adventures embarked upon and the stories passed along.

We walked the back side of the island and reflected on all aspects of our lives, here and now and what was  and used to be way back when. Skip and I embraced every moment our parents were together as it was unique and special for all of us! Thank you!

Mom and Dad on the back side- what a Maine Coast image

Skip and Joan enjoying a ride to town on a gorgeous morning

We took Joan and Phil to Boothbay Harbour for a couple nights and had a great time. One of the highlights was the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Mom  and Dad came to join us for the day. So enjoyable and inspiring.

Back on the island, we took to the water multiple times a day. Ages 6-72 participated regularly!
A tradition that starts as a child and never really goes away. Jumping off the dock, swimming in the island pool, and day adventures at Little Beach and Big beach- we did it all!

Now I must be honest, the above tradition is a new one, why? b/c our boats growing up NEVER had the power that John's boat has. He has Jack and Skip in tow here and they covered some ocean territory! what a blast!

Meanwhile Molly and I stuck to what we know best- jumping off the dock and swimming into shore!

Molly sharing some of her wisdom with Rosemary, guide dog in training.

Uncle Skip and Jack- reminiscing about Jack's trip to Alaska in June and probably talking about frisbee. Again an example of a give and take in sharing life experiences.

Young and old and yet always learning how to live life fully!

Uncle and Niece-Skip and Molly- young and old-no matter how you slice it- it is FUN!!!

My sister Anne and I both know what it is like living far away from family, but to share in traditions makes the distance seem invisible b/c old and young and young and old, we all have life lessons to share and can do it when we gather, no matter how much time is between visits- the power of family is foundational!

Sal- our other senior lab who never made it as a guide dog due to going blind- however he is an incredible therapy dog in the hospitals and he is constantly teaching little Rosemary ( and all of us!) the importance of moving slow-

In Summary since 300 pictures could not fit on the Blog- Skip and I  had a very special trip back east. It was about observing and participating in generation-less traditions and relationship building with our elders and the young, both of whom teach us so much. We came home filled to the brim with life experiences. Thank you!
