Alaska has many unique characteristics for both local residents and outsiders. I tend to leave unique politics aside and focus on landscapes and wildlife. Though Palin's house and getting stopped by a real Alaska State Trooper are temptations for some tourists, my folks chose to head south to The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and were pleasantly surprised.
The Center takes in injured and orphaned animals from around the state and looks to release them back when possible. Those that cannot be returned will remain as permanent residents in this beautiful plot of land on the south end of Turnagain Arm.
The black bears were active and as always I am quick to tell them, "nice to see you and hope to never meet any of your relatives ever in my life."
Playing tour guide and local means, I can offer the wildlife viewing while also scoping out our local snow pack and get great views on "God's Country" on of our favorite sunny side ski destinations.
Oh, and then there are the bears...
This morning was a gorgeous day for the Portage area. The colors, the snow, the sun, the clouds and having family present made it all just wonderful!
This guy had a really big itch in the center of his head.

Such a memorable excursion and it didn't even involve AK politics or troopers!
