Mom and dad came with the greatest plan - take the train to Fairbanks and see the interior of Alaska by train and fly back and see the interior by air. While in Fairbanks we were busy with some great activities as shown in some pictures included.
We went to the world championship's skijor races, world championship ice carving competitions, The museum of the North at University of Alaska, and stayed at hotel that had warm cookies in the lobby 24/7- now that was heavenly!
We were so glad to be sharing this adventure with mom and dad, because we had never been to Fairbanks and could not have picked a better winter weekend to attend. The train ride up consisted of 12 hours of spectacular views on the right were the Talkeetna mountains and to the left was the Alaska Range.
One of the highlights , which was tough to catch on film was that our train was delayed due to a slide path running across the tracks north of Talkeetna, so the crane had to go and move debris, which led to a delay in arrival-because we had to share the tracks for a bit. This all resulted in a train ride in darkness, so guess what we saw from the train about 40 minutes south of Fairbanks-The Northern Lights-from the train!
We proceeded to see them when we got to our hotel that night also, but there was something about viewing them from a train while crossing the interior, and having 3 cars of Japenese tourists ahead, who were traveling with the specific goal of seeing the Aurora Borealis...(Northtern Lights)-It was a wonderful surprise for all...
