We awoke to rain and warm warm temps on Wednesday. We watched as our beautiful white snow melted away. The roads turned black again, the morning glow of snow covered trees is now filled with dark spruce tree shadows. We go to bed to down spouts drip, drip, dripping...
As Pema Chodron would say, it is important to move toward the disappointments in life with curiosity and friendliness. She explains when things fall apart in life, there are truths to be discovered if we open our eyes and ask questions.
Disappointments come in all shapes and sizes and what is important is how we approach them.
This week Skip and I have gotten challenged by the usual change of weather early season. Last night we got home from work and just shook our heads in disappointment. What we thought was going to be a 4 day weekend of skiing and bliss was gone in a flash. With very few words, we headed out for an icy road walk, no skis, no poles, just ball cap and boots and dog on leash.

As we returned I realized the walk was a joy- we looked in homes as the lights were all on, we noticed holiday decorations being set up- lights on trees and families gathered in living rooms. It was a reminder for me to accept what arrives on my plate...if it be rain after snow, sickness after health, or alone-ness after celebration. It all holds meaning.
So as we sat eating pizza at Moose's Tooth last night and I found myself looking over at skip with his head still shaking in disappointment from the extreme weather change, I began to talk about all the things we can get done during the indoor time-...the to-do list we have had for months.
That is when I reminded him of Pema's great wisdom, we need dark in order to appreciate the light, we needs the uphills in order to have the downhills, the chaos to balance the calm...He agreed and the disappointed head shaking finally came to a rest.
